“Even Deities Evolves: When Me and God Were Atheists,” is more than a poetry collection.  It is a bit of history on cultures and religions central to Nicholson's journey to understanding God and arrival at a spiritual practice that nurtures her entire being. 

 

Its poetry is a testament to critical thinking, questioning and skepticism. With a raw and sentimental touch, Nicholson tackles cultural beliefs and expectations that can only exists when questioning is condemned.

Relative religious facts, Nicholson's favorite memes and vibration-raising meditations are included in this collection.  "Even Deities Evolve," illustrates how we can acknowledge, accept and employ our divine power. By the end of the last verse, Nicholson has introduced another way to experience God.

It wasn't at all what I expected.  We didn't realize that the main character was going to be a lesbian when we chose the book for our group.  I initially regretted this book and planned to read just enough to participate in my group's discussion.  The story pulled me in.  I'm not as old as Linny, but I grew up on a farm in the south.  So many of her struggles were challenges for all southern young women coming of age.  I identified with Linny and Coley.  In the end, I admired Linny's courage.  The Texas African American Reading Circle
